In the expansive realm of Midgard featured in God of War, players encounter majestic dragons held in captivity across hidden regions. Rather than acting purely as aggressive bosses to defeat, these mythical beasts present Kratos and Atreus with unique rescue favors. Completing these optional quests rewards players with rare materials like Dragon Tears, which are essential for high-level crafting and gear upgrades.

Finding Otr in the Hidden Region of Veithurgard

The first dragon players are likely to encounter is Otr, who is imprisoned in the isolated region of Veithurgard to the east of the Lake of Nine. To reach this hidden realm, Kratos must spin the wheel at Stone Falls to open the massive golden lake gate. Once docked in Veithurgard, navigating up the central pathway leads directly to the tethered creature.

Rescuing Otr requires locating and destroying three rune shrines scattered around his immediate area while avoiding lightning strikes. One shrine sits along a left-hand path, another rests to the right, and the final shrine lies past a locked rune door. After destroying all three seals, returning to the anchor allows Atreus to shatter the binding and free the beast.

Locating Fafnir Near the Alfheim Tower

Fafnir is another captive dragon, found north-east of the Lake of Nine behind the Alfheim Tower. Players can access this area after the Lake of Nine's water level drops for the second time during the main story. Docking near the two giant rowing statues opens the path toward the dragon's lair.

To break Fafnir's bindings, players must search the surrounding cliffs and caves to shatter three glowing shrines. The area is heavily guarded by powerful foes, including a formidable Traveler and waves of aggressive Vikens. Once the enemies are defeated and the shrines are destroyed, interacting with the central anchor completes the favor.

Freeing Reginn in the Citadel of Konunsgard

The final dragon, Reginn, is located deep within the majestic region of Konunsgard on the western edge of the map. Accessing this area requires completing previous side quests for the dwarven blacksmiths Brok and Sindri. Reginn is tethered in a large open courtyard near the entrance of the main stronghold.

Unbinding Reginn demands careful puzzle solving, as one of the rune shrines is hidden behind a door requiring timed rune bell strikes. Using World Tree Sap crystals allows players to ring the bells simultaneously to gain access to the shrine. Destroying all three shrines breaks the dragon's chains, granting players the final Dragon Tear and completing the Dangerous Skies trophy requirement.
