Wednesday Week

He was so keen to join Wednesday he ran all the way from Cardiff;
unfortunately he pulled his hamstring and will be out until December 29th..
.

Going it a-loan...

It’s been a busy old week down at S6 both on and off the field; with Richard Wood and Akpo Sodje having departed to Coventry and Charlton respectively, Brian Laws has today brought in Warren Feeney from Cardiff and Stoke's Tom Soares. Sodje has spoken of how at home he feels at The Valley and having scored two in two there’s no reason to believe the move won’t be made permanent in January; the only problem would be Akpo’s questionable ability to stay fit for more than a fortnight at a time. Northern Irishman Feeney has been brought in to bolster the front line; he has never scored for Cardiff and he too has a dodgy injury record so he should fit right in at Hillsborough! Despite widespread criticism of this move, Vital Cardiff insists the 28 year-old ‘always gave 100% and was fair and sensible in his comments to the media’ despite never really hitting it off with Cardiff City. Let’s hope the former Leeds man finds his shooting boots at Hillsborough where he will be available until the visit to Blackpool on December 28th. Soares meanwhile joins from Stoke where his opportunities have been limited this season.

Let's pretend Brian has only just arrived...

It’s also been a fairly eventful week of the pitch with the AGM taking place on Wednesday morning, followed by another one of them fans’ forums later in the evening. As AGMs go it seems to have been a quiet affair with the main byline coming out that Nick Parker is 80% confident of investment. But the club is happy to be patient if it means securing the ‘right investment.’ Said chairman Lee Strafford: ‘If things are moving positively and it's not done by Christmas, I don't care. We want the right long-term thing for Sheffield Wednesday.’ Fair enough if you ask me as setting deadlines is always risky with the demanding fanbase at Wednesday and the fallout from the Geoff Sheard affair. In the fans’ forum Strafford told fans that they should treat Brian Laws as if he’s been at the club only a year and not three, given that his hands were tied behind his back under our former esteemed chairman. Unfortunately the figures for the calendar year don’t do Laws a great amount of good given Wednesday have only recorded 12 wins in 40 games in all competitions and average only 1.2 points a game in the league since the start of the year - hardly sparkling form.

World Cup carve-up?

Sheffield’s bid to become a host city for the 2018 World Cup went to Wembley today along with the other 14 cities who are hoping to be used if England is chosen to host the World Cup. About 10 cities will be chosen when the decision is made on December 16th and then it will be up to the powers-that-be to decide which venues from which cities are chosen. Obviously there’s a big battle in Yorkshire with Elland Road, Hull’s KC Stadium and the two Sheffield stadiums in contention. It seems probable that at least one Yorkshire venue will be chosen and while it would be great to see the World Cup in Sheffield again I would put my money on Leeds getting the nod.

Bearing the Brunt of Chris' return

Back to on-the-field matters and on Saturday free-scoring West Brom visit Hillsborough hoping to continue their excellent recent run. Their visit also sees former Owl Chris Brunt return and he’s been keen to tell the West Midlands press that he still has a lot of time for Wednesday and won’t celebrate when if he scores. He also told the Express & Star ‘I got a decent reception last time so hopefully it will be the same again this time.’ I hope so too Brunty! Meanwhile Albion winger Jerome Thomas is looking forward to coming up against former Arsenal team-mate Frank Simek on Saturday. ‘He was at Arsenal with me but he is a few years younger than me,’ said Thomas, ‘I remember him being there and I will have to give him a torrid time on Saturday.’
