Championship Round-up

For the Best:
Woody's in but is Leon on his way out of the Ricoh?

After a couple of weeks off and an almighty hoo-hah over a dodgy goal or summat by that bloke in the Renault adverts we’re back to the proper stuff. We can all rejoice as for a change there won’t be ANOTHER international break just as we’re getting back into it. There are seven full sets of fixtures in the final six weeks of the calendar year and we all know the tricky festive period can make or break a season...

Newcastle went back to the top of the Championship on Monday night with one those tricky 1-0 away wins that the promotion favourites invariably dig out. The Magpies have now won four on the bounce since their defeat to Scunthorpe last month and with home games against Swansea and Watford coming up you can see them pulling away well before the New Year.
West Brom are doing a pretty decent job of keeping up pursuit having finally found their shooting boots, scoring eleven goals in three successive victories. Next stop Hillsborough for Chris Brunt and co. He scored a cracking goal on Saturday so I’m hoping he leaves his shooting boots on the Birmingham Road next weekend.
Leicester quietly sneaked into third with a 1-0 win over Plymouth but left it late; Andy King finished off a goalmouth scramble to secure the three points in injury time. Swansea went fourth on Friday night, beating Derby by the popular 1-0 scoreline, continuing where they left off after winner the five-goal thriller against Cardiff a fortnight ago. Roberto Martinez may well be wishing he stayed in South Wales after his Wigan side shipped nine on Sunday...

Down at the bottom it’s looking pretty bleak for Peterborough.

In Mark Cooper’s first game in charge they couldn’t even manage a point against a Sheffield United side who were winless since September. They were the architects of their own downfall with striker George Boyd missing a penalty, and the former Kettering boss, Cooper, has got a job on his hands getting Posh out of trouble.

Ipswich remain second bottom and the less said about the 0-0 draw with Wednesday the better; although I haveheard that the matchday programme featured an interview with a prominent member of the Owlsalive community.

It seems all is not rosy at Coventry despite Richard Wood moving down there to help their promotion push (eight points off the playoffs, three points above the drop incidentally). Another former Owl, Leon Best, could be on his way out of the Ricoh as Cov try to persuade him against a move to the likes of Celtic, West Brom and Birmingham City; all of whom are interested according to the Coventry Telegraph. He is set to be offered an improved contract in the hope of tying him up before the window opens in January. I just hope they’ve got enough money left...

My favourite story of the weekend also involves Coventry and two of our favourite people - Clinton Morrison and Neil Warnock. A late Jose Fonte challenge on the ‘Irishman’ right in front of Mr Warnock’s technical area prompted the former Sheffield United boss to tell the former Palace striker ‘it wasn’t that bad.’ The Coventry Telegraph reports that the Portuguese defender had already been booked in the first half but, as referee Jarnail Singh ran across, Morrison ‘launched a furious verbal attack on the Palace boss.’ By the time the resultant melee was resolved the threat of a yellow card had gone and Warnock was left to laugh off the confrontation. ‘He made my point for me by jumping straight back on to his feet,’ said Warnock, ‘I thought it was funny and I let him do all the talking.’ Not like Clinton to be throwing his toys out the pram and not like Colin to be causing a bit of aggro...glad to see some things never change!

Enjoy your football.
