Championship Round-up

The lad's a bit special

That lad Brunty, though...

There were a shed load of goals in the Championship this weekend with at least five goals in half of the12 fixtures. The tone was set in the Steel City on Friday night with a five-goal thriller at the Lane; the home side squeaking home despite leading 3-0 at half time. West Brom’s trip to Boro was meant to be a tight tussle between two sides tipped for promotion but the Baggies spanked the Smoggies thanks to two goals from Chris Brunt; one a deflected free-kick and the other a peach from miles out. Not as good as his goal at Leeds a few years back mind. Peterborough came from two down to beat Reading 3-2; a much-needed win for Darren Ferguson’s side while Watford and Leicester City shared the spoils in a six-goal thriller; a 3-3 draw also the outcome between Donny and Ipswich.

Stick to the Rs not cars, Flavio!

QPR picked up an important win at Cardiff thanks to a brace from loanee Jay Simpson, however not for the first time Rangers have more to worry about off the field with the F1 saga involving QPR co-owner Flavio Briatore. Manager Jim Magilton has insisted it won’t distract the team despite the fact Football League rules state that no-one can own a club if they are banned by another sporting governing body. He is instead focussing on his side’s short trip to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night to meet Chelsea in the Carling Cup. "We're all aware of what's happened and what is going on, but footballers are pretty selfish brutes and they tend to take care of their own business,” said the former Owls midfielder. Cardiff manager Dave Jones meanwhile was distinctly unimpressed by the application put in by his side’s front six in the weekend’s defeat berating his forwards as “non-existent.” They also face Premier League opposition in the Cup in the form of Aston Villa, where they travel tomorrow night.

Looking bleak you janner!

Plymouth fans must really be struggling for reasons to be cheerful at the minute after the epic voyage to Newcastle resulted in another defeat and their side remains bottom of the pile. The visit of Forest next weekend has been moved to Sunday lunchtime for Sky and Paul Sturrock seems well aware a defeat could see his reign come to an end. "At the end of the day, there's only so far a board can wait for me to turn it around.” You have to admire PS for his honesty and you hope he turns things round at Argyle but his days do look numbered. Swansea City meanwhile made it three games without a goal following their draw at fellow relegation candidates Barnsley. They host Sheffield United at the weekend and City captain Garry Monk insists “when one goes in we'll get a hat full.” Let’s hope so eh, Garry!

Up for the Cup?

Several Championship sides are in Carling Cup action over the next two nights, although needless to say neither Sheffield side will feature in the third round. West Brom face a daunting trip to the Emirates tonight to face a bunch of 16 year-olds who are probably better than them, Barnsley host Burnley and Peterborough host Newcastle in tonight’s only all-Championship tie. Preston join QPR and Cardiff in Carling Cup action tomorrow night as they host Spurs.

Enjoy your football.
