Wednesday Week

Time to go, Franny...hang your head

Week Three Review

What a difference a few days makes! After the wave of optimism following our comprehensive conquering of Scunny, just a few days later we’re back to square one following the dismal defeat to Port Vale and Jeffers’ brainless butt. The latter resulted in Jeffers being fined two weeks' wages and being dumped on the transfer list and one can only hope we have seen the last of FJ9 in a Wednesday shirt as that sort of behaviour has no place at our club. Franny’s assault on Vale’s captain has understandably overshadowed the performance at Vale Park but in truth it was a dismal display long before the sending off. Laws can be blamed for making seven changes to the side that won 4-0 at the weekend, especially changing 75% of the back four, but several players failed to step up to the plate which contradicts the noises coming out of S6 that we now have a squad of players which is capable of winning games whatever the line-up; especially against League Two opposition.

Where are you???

Of course, Lee Strafford’s attendance pronouncement on P or G in the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s victory was ill-timed and ill-thought-out; focussing on the low attendance of just over 20,000 rather than the excellent performance on the pitch. Strafford has since come out and said it was intended as a rallying cry rather than an admonition of the ‘stay away’ fans however he would have done better to have focussed on the positive performance and use that as encouragement for more fans to turn up for the next home game against Forest.

The pilgrimage awaits...

Forest is still a couple of weeks away though and Wednesday have a massive game as they look to go into the international break with some sort of momentum by way of a second league win on the bounce. Whilst the players mustn’t ignore their dismal performance in ‘one of the towns of the Potteries’ they must put it behind them as quickly as possible and look to Plymouth as an opportunity to gain their first away win of the season against a side who are winless in the current campaign. Wednesday are again struggling for striking options, though, with Jeffers suspended and Leon Clarke still struggling to recover from his hamstring injury. Luke Varney will go straight back into the side after being cup-tied for Port Vale while Sodje will take his place on the bench after 45 minutes at Vale Park.

Stadium plans get the thumbs-up

Wednesday’s ambitious stadium plans have received encouraging community backing after key stakeholders from the Local Education Authority, Sheffield City Council, city MPs, the Lord Mayor, Graham Oxley, The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University attended last week’s launch. The proposal which includes the creation of a learning zone in the West Stand and the biggest classroom in the country in the North Stand have been widely praised for embracing community projects and organisations. Sheffield Hillsborough MP, Angela Smith, said: "Sheffield Wednesday's stadium development plan is immensely exciting, not least because it demonstrates unequivocally the club's commitment to the communities within which it is rooted."

Don't beam me back, Scotty

Finally, this week the club has announced there will be no beamback of the Steel City Derby from Bramall Lane despite the success of the event last year. This is because the game is live on SKY and the broadcaster believed a beamback would conflict with their live coverage. Wednesdayites who won’t be making the trip to S2 will be able to watch the game at Hillsborough as the club will be showing the game in the 1867 Lounge where a panel of former players, including David Hirst and Terry Curran, will offer their views pre-match, post-match and at half time. Tickets cost £20, which includes pie, chips and peas in the 1867 Lounge. For more information see the OS.
