Championship Round-up

How long until Billy Davies gets sick of you, David?

Best team in England?

Cardiff City continued their excellent start to the new campaign with an emphatic 3-0 win over Bristol City at the imaginatively named ‘Cardiff City Stadium’. Their third win in four games was aided by Michael Chopra’s first half strike, his seventh goal of the season and I read earlier this makes him the top scorer in England. Not entirely correct as three of those goals did come in Wales...Unsurprisingly the three relegated sides, Boro, Newcastle and West Brom are keeping pace with Cardiff and you’d be hard pushed to see any reason why those three won’t be in the mix come May.

Keane to bring to new players in?

Meanwhile down at the bottom things go from bad to worse for Roy Keane and his Ipswich side whose 2-0 defeat at West Brom leaves them second bottom with just one point from their first four games. The always level-headed Keane has come out and said that one or two of the players who featured at the weekend will never play for him again. Meanwhile it is believed he was at Sunderland’s 4-1 victory over Norwich last night watching Nyron Nosworthy and Carlos Edwards. Unfortunately for Keane he doesn’t have the luxury of a bottomless pit like he did in the North-East so expect Dwight Yorke and Andrew Cole to arrive on frees this week.

Struggle for Dingles and Posh

Barnsley are the only side below the East Anglians having lost three on their bounce since their comeback at Hillsborough and having not scored a single goal in the league since. Simon Davey was under pressure before the season even began it seemed and there were ‘Davey out’ chants from such sections of the crowd during the Dingles’ 1-0 defeat to Leicester at the weekend. Peterborough are another side whose only point so far this season was won against Wednesday and Posh boss Darren Ferguson has admitted he needs to sort out the shaky defence who have considered five in the last two games. "It's something I must sort out quickly or we will continue to struggle," he said.

Earnshaw off to earn more at Newcastle?

Forest are another side who are struggling despite spending a fair bit of cash over the summer. Billy Davies has been busy in the media this week firstly questioning the role of David Pleat who has been appointed in a Director of Football role at the City Ground and then insisting there will probably be no more signings before the end of the transfer window; as the tabloids report that Robert Earnshaw is set to move to Newcastle in a £3 million move. Crystal Palace meanwhile look set to complete the signings of Claude Davis and Ryan Smith after their transfer embargo was lifted on Monday.

Carling Cup preview

After a high-octane start to the new campaign most Championship sides will again be in action this evening in the second round of the Carling Cup. Of course there were some who couldn’t make it past League Two sides at home in the first round but let’s hope Wednesday have no such trouble as they head to Burslem! Watford have a testing trip to Leeds with the League One side having made a very strong start to the season while there are five all-Championship ties including Forest vs. Boro and Reading vs. Barnsley.

Enjoy your football.
